Ursula K. Le Guin is unquestionably a leading science fiction author, someone who has helped shape the genre, and someone who has influenced many writers today. Given his status in the SFF writing world, it’s great to hear that there’s a new podcast exploring Le Guin’s works through discussions with established authors about Le Guin’s impact. on their own work.
This series, called Crafting with Ursula, derived from that of David Naimon long duration Between the covers Podcast. In each episode, Naimon will speak with an author about how specific Le Guin works influenced aspects of their own creative process.
The first episode, which is available now, has Becky Chambers (Travelers series, A psalm for the wild-built) discussing the art of creating aliens and alien cultures, something Chambers did beautifully in his own stories. Chambers and Naimon focus specifically on Le Guin’s The left hand of darkness and “Coming of Age in Karhide”, a short story Le Guin wrote in the same world 25 years later The left hand of darkness came out of. In the 76-minute episode, the two discuss how these pieces can inform what to consider when creating a new alien world, as well as many other topics.
